The Manchester Weekender

Manchester Weekender 2013

10 - 13 October 2013

It’s back. This October, Manchester’s celebration of art and culture returns for its fourth year. As ever, it offers a weekend-long snapshot of the best the city has to offer, from Jeremy Deller here at Manchester Art Gallery and Steve McQueen at IWM North to an Un-Convention along the Oxford Road Corridor. Vogue comes to town, Cornerhouse does Double Indemnity, and Manchester District Music Archive is at The Lowry. In between are secret gigs, pop-up ‘zines, subcultural football, an exhibition in a day, pedal-powered cinema, gastro tours and A Highland Romance. It’s a weekend of what we do best in Manchester: the informed, the strange, the cultured and the unforgettable. Check out day-by-day highlights guides to what’s on or the full event listings on the Creative Tourist website.

Manchester Art Gallery and the Gallery of Costume will be getting involved in a big way. On Thursday 10th we'll be hosting a special Thursday Late as part of Fashion's Night Out - Vogue magazine's big fashion extravaganza which comes to Manchester for the first time. You'll be able to shop at our pop up Vintage Fair or even make the front cover with a retro-style magazine shoot, as we try to recreate some of fashion's most iconic moments. There's more information about Fashions Night Out here.

Jeremy Deller curates All that is Solid Melts into Air

On Saturday 12 October we will open the doors to a major new exhibition by Jeremy Deller which launches here in Manchester. In All That Is Solid Melts Into Air Deller takes a personal look at the impact of the Industrial Revolution on British popular culture and its persisting influence on our lives today. The exhibition combines contemporary music, film and photography with a vast range of 19th century images and objects.

Talk with Ed Hall

Saturday 12 October
11am-12.30pm,  free.

As part of the Manchester Weekender and tying in directly with Jeremy Deller, we will also be hosting a talk by banner maker Ed Hall covering art, working class traditions and politics.

When architect Ed Hall first started applying his design skills to making protest banners for political marches he had little idea that years later his works would hang in public galleries and feature in exhibitions around the world. Indeed, Hall’s work is usually to be seen hanging alongside traditional banners in Manchester’s very own People’s History Museum; today his brand new commission for the Jeremy Deller exhibition, All That Is Solid Melts Into Air will be on show for the first time. Join Ed Hall for a mid-morning chat about an unlikely career, the tradition of banner making and its contemporary relevance. 11am-12.30pm, Saturday 12 October, free. Read more about the event at Creative Tourist.
