Pre-Raphaelite art, and the influence of the Pre-Raphaelite movement can be seen across Manchesterís streets and buildings. Writer and Blue Badge Guide Jonathan Schofield will lead this fascinating tour of the city.
This tour takes in places of significance, details on buildings, stained glass, murals and literature. It examines Ford Madox Brown’s legacy and the work of Frederick Shields. It covers the key role of John Ruskin in shaping the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and also in shaping the buildings of Manchester especially through architects such as Thomas Worthington, Alfred Waterhouse and Alfred Salomans.
The tour also examines the philosophy and thought processes which were influenced by or concurrent with Pre-Raphaelitism. This includes aspects of Manchester’s radical politics, in particular the city’s unique world-view in the last half of the nineteenth century which still influences life in 2008.
This tour is just one of a number of talks, tours and workshops that accompany our current exhibition Holman Hunt and the Pre-Raphaelite Vision. See our Holman Hunt exhibition events page for details of more activities.
