A talk about the attack by three suffragettes on 14 paintings in Manchester Art Gallery as part of the militant campaign for votes for women. Annie Briggs, Evelyn Manesta and Lillian Forrester were charged under the Malicious Damage Act. They made a statement stating that “we broke the glass of some pictures as a protest but we did not intend to damage the pictures”.
You can also visit the display in Gallery 8 of some of the Victorian masterpieces that were attacked by the suffragettes 100 years ago. Find out more about the suffragette attack at the gallery here.
