Volunteer guide, Deborah Leftwich, gets to grips with the term 'postmodern'.
The post-modern movement in art developed during the latter part of the last century, arguably, as a reaction to modernism, or the abstraction of art from realism and representation.
The old hierarchies of painting and sculpture were rejected in favour of new forms of expression such as photography, video art, collage and installation. Post-modern art embodies complexity, contradiction and ambiguity and for these reasons is not always easy to engage with or understand.
This tour will take in some of the more recent displays in the gallery such as photography and video art to explore the precepts of post-modernism.
