Woman in the Plural: Czech Surrealism's Women Artists
Czech Surrealism is one of the most distinctive and intriguing of the movement's international incarnations. This lecture will highlight the key contribution of three women: the painter Toyen (a founder member from the 1930s and major figure of Surrealism in postwar Paris), photographer Emila Medkova (working during the group's clandestine existence after the war), and the contemporary painter and writer Eva Svankmajerova (until her recent death a cornerstone of today's thriving Surrealist activity in Prague). Spanning over seventy years of often turbulent existence for Czech Surrealism, themes of dream, the city, the body and women's identity weave across three bodies of work.
