Join us for this lunchtime discussion about two art works on display. Just turn up and see what other people think and contribute your thoughts and ideas. Discussions are led by a member of gallery staff or a trained volunteer. Meet in the Atrium near the main information desk in the centre of the building.

Detail: Join us for a breath of sea air as we visit the recently reopened Atkinson in Southport. The trip includes a curator-led highlights tour of the newly restored galleries, and a look at the major touring exhibition from the V&A, Recording Britain.

Detail: Are you learning English? English Corner uses art and objects to help people learn English. Our English tutor, Kate will lead you in activities, which help you practise your speaking and listening skills using our current exhibitions House Proud and Eastern Exchanges.

Title: Japanese Metalwork

Detail: Silversmith Wayne Meeten discusses Japanese metalworking techniques and his fascinating experiences studying metalwork in Japan. Meeten is a highly respected master silversmith / goldsmith who transforms cold, hard metal into rippling forms which suggest natural forces, like wind or waves.

His work includes sculptures, vessels and jewellery using traditional Japanese metalwork techniques of handraising and mokume gane. These techniques, which were originally used to make arms and armour for the Samurai, demand many hours of patient practice and are still virtually exclusive to Japan.

Meeten, has won numerous awards for his work, and scholarships to study in Japan with several of the country's leading experts. He'll be talking about his experiences and his work at this not-to-be-missed event, a must for everyone interested in metalwork or learning about Japanese culture.

Wayne studied at the prestigious Sir John Cass School of Art, Guild Hall University and is a visiting lecturer there.

Detail: The Philosophy Cafe is an informal discussion group combining art and philosophy. Each topic is chosen by the previous months group and links to current exhibitions on display. It's a great way to have a meaningful conversation and enjoy art. Meet in the cafe bar.

Detail: Join singing-storyteller Black Jack Barnet as he takes you on a musical voyage through our Victorian galleries. Featuring tales of ferocious cheetahs and fearsome stags, sleepy old lions, seductive sirens, soldiers, pirates, navvies and more, you'll learn to see some of Manchester Art Gallery's best loved paintings in a whole new light.
