Our gallery and its collections are worth talking about - so what better resource for people learning to speak English?
Come along, enjoy artworks and meet other students.
You will look at artworks and talk about them together. Our English tutor will help you practise your speaking and listening skills. The sessions are friendly and our tutor will make sure you can join in even if you have only just started to learn English.
"English Corner is very good practice for me. I can learn English and know about art as well."

Throughout February –to June 2013, Manchester Art Gallery are working in partnership with The Manchester Museum and the Gallery of Costume to deliver a series of 6-week courses with participants from Refugee Action’s well-being programme and the Somali Women’s Group linked to Wai Yin Chinese Women Society. The short courses have been a great way to help us experiment with how English Corner works in different venues and has helped us strengthen relationships with key community partners. The participants have found it very beneficial in helping them learn and improve their English in a non-classroom setting.
‘It’s been a very happy time in very nice buildings. I feel more free to speak English and don’t feel too shy now when practicing in public.’

Thinking of bringing an ESOL group for a self programmed visit? Use our downloadable top tips sheet to help you plan your session.
Manchester Art Gallery and the Gallery of Costume are home to the city’s very own collections of art, fashion and design.
We’re changing our displays more frequently these days, so you can see the widest possible range of paintings, sculptures, drawings and objects from our collections, alongside works we’ve borrowed from other institutions and collectors.
It’s a good idea to have a theme to plan your visit around and use 2 or 3 artworks which relate to this theme. Please do call Ruth Edson on 0161 2358877 to discuss ideas for themes and relevant artworks on display to explore.
We love to know you've been with your group so don't forget to sign in at the info desk when you get here. It's also really helpful if you let us know you're coming so please contact us in advance if you can. Please contact Ruth Edson:
