Why volunteer with us?

A gallery volunteer supporting research

Why volunteer?

Volunteering your time is a great way to learn new skills, meet new people and contribute to your community.

Our volunteers have said that being involved at the galleries has:

  • boosted their CV
  • got them back into work
  • improved their confidence
  • improved their health
  • helped them 'give something back'
  • been fun
  • helped them build connections with organisations
  • helped them make new friends
  • been very rewarding

Volunteering at Manchester Art Gallery makes me feel immensely proud. I always want to tell people about the gallery and I say how it put my life in a whole new direction. I have never painted so much in all my life, as a result of the support at opportunities at Manchester Art Gallery. I am able to give myself to projects and see positive results, and to see children laugh and be wowed by my volunteering is amazing.

What people are saying about our volunteers

Staff and visitors regularly comment on the value and support of volunteers:

All our volunteers are fantastic! The success of the family offer is often down to the work, time and effort that volunteers like Martin and Grace put into making sure that families enjoy their experience of the gallery.
Louise Thompson, Informal Learning Assistant

Jenny is a great volunteer. She embraced all the different aspects of the role here, from basic admin and prep for funding bids, through to reserach, meeting artists, developing interpretation and installing exhibitions.
Fiona Corridon, Curator of Exhibitions

Brilliant staff and volunteers in the speech bubble tent, excellent manner with the children.
Visitor 2011

The guided tour today was fantastic. The volunteer guide provided a detailed description of all the paintings and related it to the situtation of people at the time.
