Jane Hamilton, Wife of 9th Lord Cathcart, and her Daughter Jane, later Duchess of Atholl
Europe, United Kingdom, England
First floor: 18th Century
124 x 99 cm
Jane Hamilton, Countess Cathcart
with her daughter Jane 1754-5
Sir Joshua Reynolds 1723-1792
Oil on canvas
This companion portrait to that of the sitter's husband
is based on Madonna and Child compositions
by Italian old masters such as Raphael.
The whippet, who had his own sitting,
stands in for St John the Baptist.
Jane was the sister of Sir William Hamilton,
a distinguished antiquary and diplomat.
She was also a friend of Wedgwood
and later did much to promote his pottery.
Reynolds was notoriously experimental with materials:
red pigment has faded in the flesh tones of this work
which gives the figures a ghost-like appearance.
