Michael Angelo Rooker 1743-1801
Oil on canvas
Rooker specialised in painting medieval antiquities.
This branch of topography, or accurate recording,
reflected a widespread interest in historical monuments.
Here, evidence of building work in the foreground
introduces a fashionable air of objective detachment.
Most of Rooker's work was in watercolour,
making this quite a rare painting.
It was among a group of five oils
he exhibited while a student at the Royal Academy.
Only by exhibiting in oils at this date
could a painter achieve status as an artist.
