Manchester from Belle Vue 1861
George Danson 1799-1899
Oil on panel
This view shows Hyde Road,
which even in 1861 was a major thoroughfare
although the vehicles then were horse drawn.
The belching chimneys of industrial Manchester
can be seen in the distance.
Belle Vue was famous for its Zoological Gardens.
Founded in 1836, they finally closed in the 1970s.
Danson painted large panoramic backdrops
for the Belle Vue firework displays
which were always a major event,
often taking historic battles as their theme.
