Venus and Her Doves 1836
William Etty 1787-1849
Oil on canvas
Etty represents Venus, the Roman goddess of love,
with her son, Cupid, and a female attendant.
Doves were Venus's favourite birds
and are often seen with her in works of art.
Etty's composition is strongly influenced by Titian,
and especially recalls his Sacred and Profound Love
in the Villa Borghese, Rome.
Etty painted the work for the mill owner Daniel Grant,
a Mancunian who also bought The Sirens and Ulysses
from the artist in the following year.
