Cakebread Street (Sunshine after Rain) 1998
Liam Spencer born 1964
Oil on board
Spencer particularly admires Valette's small direct studies
for their 'subtlety, sensitivity, beautifully registered
tonal values and a deft and economical draughtsmanship'.
He clearly aims for many of these artistic qualities
in his own small works painted directly from observation.
Spencer lives and works in Manchester.
Cakebread Street is a cul-de sac in Ardwick Green:
this view is from a 6th floor studio he once had nearby.
He painted it at different times of the day and night
and in many different weather conditions.
Of this painting Spencer wrote:
In addition to the obvious pleasure
of sunshine after rain,
these circumstances create
an increased saturation of colour
which is grist to the mill of a landscape painter.
