Vacuum 1994
Steven Pippin born 1960
Perspex, aluminium, television monitor and a vacuum
Much of Pippin's work shows a particular interest
in the self-sufficient machine, a popular myth
and one of the underlying fears of our age.
Another of his obsessions is with television
and its domination of our lives.
The TV in Vacuum is encased in its bubble.
The muffled sound frustrates any effort to listen.
The "rabbit" ears which enclose the aerial
are playfully remeniscent of cartoon characters
and work made by American pop artist Jeff Koons.
Gift of the Contemporary Art Society in 1999
