Queen Pineapple
Made by Kate Malone 1994
Stoneware, with coloured crystalline glazes
Kate Malone is intrigued by the idea of growth:
'The wonder of nature, having a seed in your hand...
it gets wet and it grows into this huge thing.
It's almost as if it's an Alice in Wonderland dream'.
Queen Pineapple was made specially for the Gallery
and is the largest pot Malone has made to date.
She has always wanted to make huge pots
although work on this scale is extremely challenging.
She describes the pineapple as a favourite fruit,
'a lovely regal thing, luscious and exotic'.
It is also traditionally a symbol of hospitality
and was used by potters of the 1700s
who made pineapple teapots and other tablewares.
