The Hopes at Home 1973-7
Howard Hodgkin born 1932
Oil on plywood
Although inspired by a particular memory or event,
Hodgkin's paintings usually take a long time to complete.
He says his titles are absolutely specific,
yet the subjects seem elusive and intangible.
Figures and objects are abstracted to a high degree
but Hodgkin still regards his paintings as figurative.
His expressive use of colour exploits to the full
its emotional and psychological qualities.
Mattise and Indian art are sources of inspiration,
as are the decorative, colourful interiors of Vuillard.
Hodgkin's use of a strong border colour in this painting
adds luminosity and intensity to its centre.
