About the work

William Ewart Gladstone held the office of Prime Minister four times (1868-74, 1880-85, 1886 and 1892-94). Although beginning his political career as a Conservative, he moved to the Liberal party and achieved much of his work as a Liberal. Gladstone visited Manchester on a large number of occasions and was appreciated in Manchester for his role in the establishment of elementary schools and the free press.
