About the work

The United Kingdom’s longest reigning monarch is commemorated in Piccadilly Gardens with a large representation of the Queen enthroned. Queen Victoria’s presence and morals form the backdrop to many of the events that are commemorated in Manchester’s public art.

The over life size bronze statue was unveiled on 10 October 1901.

Inscription on pedestal:
HER MOST GRACIOUS MAJESTY / QUEEN VICTORIA / ERECTED BY THE CITIZENS OF MANCHESTER IN 1901 TO COMMEMORATE / THE COMPLETION IN 1897 / OF THE SIXTIETH YEAR OF HER REIGN
Inscription on pedestal beneath Motherhood:
