About the work
Oliver Heywood was a local banker who gave much of his time and money to public charities and educational institutions such as Cheetham’s Hospital, the Mechanics’ Institute and Owens College. In the mid- to late 19th Century many of Manchester’s richer citizens were moving out of the city and this made Heywood’s actions all the more meaningful.
