John Bright’s statue stands in Albert Square. Bright was born in Rochdale and was involved in local politics, especially the Anti-Corn Law League. Bright was a fierce opponent of the oppression of the poor, both in this country and abroad. He was a strong supporter of Abraham Lincoln and was one of the men who encouraged the boycott of Southern cotton during the American Civil War.
