Sir John Barbirolli was conductor of the Halle Orchestra from 1943 to 1970. He resurrected the orchestra, which had dwindled because of the war, and made it into a household name.
There are two sculptures of Barbirolli in Manchester. One is a large bust outside the Bridgewater Hall and the other, by the same artist, is in the Town Hall sculpture hall and is a study of a vibrant man.
The larger than life-size bronze bust on a red sandstone pedestal was Installed 2000.
On front of pedestal: BARBIROLLI
Rear of pedestal: SIR JOHN BARBIROLLI CH / 1899-1970 / CONDUCTOR LAUREATE / HALLE ORCHESTRA / "Or walk with Kings ~ / nor lose the common touch" / THIS MEMORIAL WAS PROMOTED / BY / IVAN SAXTON
