About the work

The Duke of Wellington is best known for leading British troops during their victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. Following his military success he turned to politics and became Prime Minister in 1827. The people of Manchester raised a statue to Wellington in Piccadilly Gardens - where it remains to this day - soon after his death in 1852. The bronze statue on a granite pedestal was unveiled on 30 August 1856.
