During the transatlantic slave trade the North West flourished. The wealth of the region grew through processing raw goods such as cotton, sugar, tobacco and palm oil and through the production of materials used in the trade including boat building, exchange goods, manacles and chains, food and water containers, plantation tools, clothing for enslaved Africans and their owners. This economic growth led to the building of canals and railways to facilitate the transport of goods for import and export around the world.
