The Desert - The African Holocaust

The transatlantic slave trade is often referred to as the African Holocaust. The estimated number of Africans displaced as a result of being captured and enslaved or being born into enslavement is 12 million. The colonisation of the African continent by Europeans has also led to displacement as country borders carved out by colonisers did not take into consideration local tribal lands. The legacy of this fragmentation is still evident today as many African countries suffer with political turmoil and stifled economic development.
