Manchester Ship Canal Cruet
Made in England 1800-1900
Silver plate
Manchester's development during the 1800's
was funded mainly by profits from cotton
grown by enslaved labour in America.
The Ship Canal was financed by business men
who had profited from the cotton industry.
The development of Africa and the Caribbean
remains stifled long after the abolition of slavery.
Ex-colonial countries still trade with Europe,
locked into traditional economic relations
by habit, poverty and one-sided E C trade treaties.
Even in countries like Sierra Leone and Nigeria,
where diamonds and oil have been discovered,
little benefit reaches the ordinary people.
