Sugar was a luxury product during the 1650s
and a vital status symbol on the tea table,
but from the late 1700s the British public
became increasingly aware of the horrors of slavery.
Some people began to petition or boycott goods.
The Manchester Ladies Anti-Slavery Society
distributed pamphlets persuading Mancunians
to buy sugar from other sources such as South Asia,
which was 'free-grown' and not tainted by slavery.
