Boxer Shorts 1988 (1992.31)

Designed and retailed by Paul Smith, these printed cotton boxer shorts were relatively expensive, bought for £15.99 in Manchester in 1988. Such shorts. cut in a full style, and with an elasticated waist, would have been worn under loose pleated trousers, as fashionable in the 1980s, and were the height of fashion, retailed by a new store like Next as well as designers. The printed pattern on these boxers is inspired by a typical paper plan of tailoring instructions, marking out where to cut fabric and into how many pieces. As Paul Smith had made his name in the clothing industry for a modern approach to men's tailoring and fashion, this is a clever take on his cutting skills. Renowned for his use of colour and print, Smith is here also exhibiting a more zany and humorous side to his work.
