White cotton, collar, cuffs and front panel linen; straight narrow collar, 4.4 cm, rounded corners, fastening at front, buttonhole each side and pearl button on left; opening at centre front with three pairs of buttonholes, vertical on left horizontal on right, vertical panel of drawn thread work each side, pattern of squares between zig-zag borders of french knots; front in one section gathered to base of embroidered panels; back in one section gathered to yoke of double thickness in two sections; armholes strengthened with extra thickness; sleeves in one section gathered at shoulder to end of yoke and into wristband fastening with one pearl button; narrow cuff with rounded corners; side seam open with gusset and strengthening, back about 1in. shorter than front, tails rounded; (collar appears to have been cut down and a buttonhole and tape loop added at back of neck, also the front buttonhole on right); written in ink at base of seam on right "I Wright" 1854.
Belonged to donor's paternal grand father, Mr Wright, who was Scottish and lived in Glasgow. See all items 1961.10-13.
