Another of Etty's paintings, Venus and her Doves, has suffered significant damage over the past 200 years. His experimental painting technique left wide cracks in the paintwork, distorting the picture. Past conservators have literally painted over the cracks to preserve the image.
Our conservators have removed this restoration. Which image do you prefer? The unrestored, 'pure' painting with its visible history of wear and tear? Or the completed image, restored by another hand?
