Weekends at the gallery for families
Make the most of you free time together at one of our weekend activities. As one of our regular family visitors puts it, “It’s about showing your kids there’s more to life than sitting in front of the telly.“
Make: the first Saturday of every month
Saturdays 5 September, 3 October, 7 November, 5 December, 2 January, 6 February, 1 – 3pm
Come along to Family art club where you can play games and be creative in this relaxed two-hour workshop for you and your 6 – 11 year olds. Limited places please arrive early.
Imagine: the second weekend of every month (starts November)
Saturdays and Sundays 14 – 15 November, 13 – 12 December, 9 – 10 January, 13 February, 12 – 4pm
Drop into the gallery to experiment and play with the material of the month. From string to tin, paper to plastic – you’ll be amazed at the extraordinary things you can do with ordinary stuff. Stay for as little or as long as you want. Suitable for families with children of any age.

Talk: the third weekend of every month
(starts October but please note October’s Meet the Artist with Stacey Manton is on Saturday 10 October)
Curiosity tours
Saturdays 17 October, 21 November, 19 December, 17 January, 21 February, 1pm and 2.30pm
Find out more about the gallery in our new interactive tours for families. We’ll be discovering different ways of looking, seeking hidden treasures and asking what makes a painting special through discussion and gallery activities.

Meet the artist

Children aged 5+ who enjoy art will love asking questions and learning about what it’s like to be a real live artist, and you might get some ideas on how to nurture their talent.

Even when there isn’t an event taking place, we can provide you with the tools you need to make your family’s visit fun. Borrow a Story Bag, put on an Explorer Belt or pick up an Activity Backpack and embark on a journey of discovery around the building. Find Tony Ross’ funny picture labels and follow the drawing trail or feel your way along the handling trail and listen to the descriptions of the objects you’re touching.

Half term holidays
Don’t miss our fabulous family workshops at half terms.
In October you can take your place on the assembly lines at the Girls and Boys Puppet Factory and create your own puppet to take home (Tuesday 17 – Friday 30 October, 1 – 3pm)
In February you can hunt for flotsam, jetsam and washed-up wreckage around the gallery then use it to build an arty boat to take home (Tuesday 16 February – Friday 19 February, 1 – 3pm).
