'...nothing short of a perfect summer holiday day out.'
Manchester Evening News
Join us this summer on a quest around the gallery and back in time. Meet the classical heroes and mythic monsters that lurk among our sculptures and watch from the paintings on our walls.
Come and play in our Heroes and Monsters exhibition (20 July - 19 September) and see Jim Medway’s fantastic mural. It brings those Ancient Greek superbeings into our modern world and sends you on a journey of discovery around the gallery.
There you can put on your crown and pick up one of Jim’s amazing interactive Hero Quest maps. You are the hero in your own epic story as you play, draw and imagine your way around the gallery, finding mysterious objects, meeting other heroes and immortals and slaying monsters.
Entry to the exhibition and all events is free

Dance, make a costume and draw
28 July, 4, 11, 18, 25 August
1–3pm (sign in from 12.30pm)
Show us your superhero moves in our dance workshop. Discover your immortal powers and make a superbeing costume to take home. What will you do in it? Fly? Throw thunderbolts? Turn invisible? It’s up to you. Draw your super-self to add to Jim Medway’s mural.
Play music, write poems and make a costume
29 July, 5, 12, 19, 26 August
1–3pm (sign in from 12.30pm)
Little ones can make monster music while older children create spine-chilling rhymes in our performace workshops. Make a monster costume to take home and you can turn into something scary whenever you want.
Role-play and make a costume
30 July, 6, 13, 20, 27 August
1–3pm (sign in from 12.30pm)
Play the hero in our interactive story workshop. Get dressed for a quest - make jewellery and headdresses or shields and helmets to take home. Even if you can’t make it to one of the costume-making workshops, why not bring your own costume (superhero, princess, monster, anything you like!) to wear on your Hero Quest around the gallery?
When you need a break from your quest, take in a big screen epic (in association with the Family Friendly Film Festival).
