We Face Forward: Art and Music From West Africa Today,

1 June – 16 September 2012

It’s West Africa all over Manchester this summer, with contemporary art and music taking place at venues and in public spaces across the city. The visual art element is an ambitious exhibition of contemporary art spread across three venues, Manchester Art Gallery, Whitworth Art Gallery and the Gallery of Costume at Platt Hall. It features work by around 30 artists and includes painting, drawing, photography, textiles, sculpture, video and sound work.

This training day is for teachers planning to use We Face Forward: Art and Music From West Africa Today in their schemes of work. In it, we’ll examine the context of the artworks in the exhibition as well as some of the techniques the artists use.

Starting at Manchester Art Gallery, you’ll meet artists whose practice has been influenced by West Africa and who have created tours of the exhibition. You’ll explore the exhibition and its themes and receive a resource to take away that will enable you to guide your students on a visit to the exhibition.

In the afternoon you’ll head to the Whitworth Art Gallery for an introduction to the rest of the exhibition and a practical, creative workshop exploring some of the techniques used by the featured artists.
