Secondary Workshops & Tours

Students listeningCritical and Contextual

Students engage critically with our collections and exhibitions, using an enquiry based learning approach that encourages both artistic and curatorial interpretation of artworks. They do this with the aid of our unique resource, the object dialogue box, which contains a collection of bizarre, hybrid objects. Working individually and collaboratively, students use these to make associations, discover meanings, create dialogues and form their own interpretations of works in the gallery's collection. Outcomes can directly link into coursework requirements.

Getting Under the SkinSome students working

Moving from historical to contemporary artworks, students explore mark-making, surface pattern and gesture to discover how artists have represented people, identity, body and skin. Using formal elements they will unpeel the artist's layers through the use of drawings and paintings and use print making techniques in our studios to create personal responses that can be extended back at school.

Character Building

Artworks can provoke emotions, inspire ideas and unlock imagination. Your students will work in groups to explore and respond to our collection. Using drama exercises to get words and ideas flowing they will be encouraged to take risks and use collaborative approaches as they map the emotional landscape of a three dimensional, multi-faceted character.

At Key Stage 3 this session offers a fresh and playful approach to character-driven short fiction, which can be developed in any number of ways to meet the needs of your students.

At Key Stage 4 the session is perfect for developing a piece of original writing, such as the creation of a monologue with a strong sense of character voice.
