Masterclasses 2009-10

Masterclasses provide a wonderful opportunity to meet the artist, share their passion and explore their process and methodology. All artists in this series have been influenced by the Galleries artworks in their own practice.

Autumn Term

Green abstractMary Gregg Collection

Mary Greg’s collection of over 1000 domestic and craft based objects has often been seen as chaotic, sentimental and bizarre. Ceramicist Sharon Blakey, has been exploring these objects to gather inspiration for her own work, where historic collections inform contemporary practise. She will explore objects that have personal significance for your pupils and introduce creative processes including wire sketching and clay working.

Spring Term

Goya night-time gargoylesEtchings by Francesco de Goya

This exhibition showcases around thirty rarely displayed etchings that demonstrate the extraordinary imagination, wit, satire and cruelty, which define Goya’s work. Fine Artist, Katy McCall, has been working with the curator of this exhibition and young people to develop innovative interpretations examining issues that remain relevant today. She will use her experiences and expertise to introduce drawing techniques that will culminate in a final print in response to these timeless themes.

Summer Term

Two blue figures entwinedGallery of Costume Collection

The Gallery of Costume is due to re-open in March 2010, and will have new spaces dedicated for exhibitions and educational activities. The summer exhibition will be the work produced by contemporary textile artist Alice Kettle, who is known for her dramatic figurative panels built up using free machine embroidery. Alice has drawn inspiration from boxes of gloves, portrait photos and caricatures and using her trade mark stitch drawings will work with your pupils to produce a range of samples.

Charges

Student masterclasses are £175 (maximum of 20 students) 
Teacher's masterclasses are £50 per teacher.

Teacher masterclasses are one-day courses, 10am – 3.30pm, and are for teachers who want to develop their creativity and skills.
Student masterclasses run from 10am to 2.30pm and are aimed at young people aged 14 – 19 years.
