Take a Seat

Pupils experience the design process by looking at our range of seating from the 17th century to the present day. They will try their skills at constructing and deconstructing chairs and developing design sheets to create their own design.

Aims (Skills, Knowledge, Outcome)

  • Castle Chair by Wendell Castle, 1969To introduce pupils to a variety of chairs in the collection
  • To gain a better understanding of the design process and function of chairs
  • To explore the design of chairs from the 17th century to the present day
  • To understand how a chair can be constructed in different ways

 What happens in the session

The session takes a tour of the Gallery of Craft and Design observing and discussing the design process of chairs from the 17th century to the present day.

Pupils learn how to use the gallery as a learning resource by drawing and recording their observations. Back in the studio they will construct and deconstruct a series of chairs and then design one of their own using the design sheet process.

How to prepare for the session

  • Discuss with pupils the different types of chairs they have experienced both at home and school
  • Talk about the different shapes and styles of chairs and the materials used to make a chair

 What people are saying

"Teachers like the variety chairs to look at from very old to contemporary and pupils love constructing and deconstructing the different chairs"
