About
Decoding art has been developed by Manchester Art Gallery and independent consultant Julian Tomlin to explore how it can improve understanding of the public works of art in Manchester. A selection of artworks have had Quick Response codes (QR codes) added to them. QR codes are a special type of barcode that can store web addresses which can be scanned by many modern mobile camera phones. Users with a camera phone equipped with QR code reader software can scan these codes and enable the phone’s web browser to launch and redirect to the stored web address. If you don’t have QR code reader software on your mobile, you may be able to download it here.
Conservator Beth Courtney has written the entries for the artworks, and historian and broadcaster, Jonathan Schofield has provided audio commentaries.
This is a pilot project and we are very interested in your feedback about the how the service works for you, and about the information we have provided about the artworks. Please use the comment forms available at the end of this and every page to let us know what you think, let us know how we could improve things or if you have any problems with any part of the service.
