Fashion fun for families this half term

Thursday 12th October 2006

This half-term (24-27 October), families are invited to take inspiration from textile designer to the stars Georgina von Etzdorf, whose creations have been worn by Kylie, Princess Diana and Mick Jagger, at the fantastic free Material Matters workshop at Manchester Art Gallery.

A textile studio for children has been created, which will be overflowing with a sea of textured materials including net, velvet and cotton and a rainbow of brightly coloured dyes. They can try laminating different materials together, explore dissolving fabrics, mix painted dyes, stitch and print directly onto fabric and above all else, create unique, individual textile pieces of their very own.

All of this is set against the backdrop of the fantastic Georgina von Etzdorf exhibition, the inspiration for the day, which celebrates 25 years of one of the most influential British design labels in the international fashion industry. Here visitors can marvel over the company’s original sketches, finished artwork, experimental prototypes, and much more.

Zoe Renilson, Family Programmes Manager at Manchester Art Gallery, comments, “Kids love to investigate new experiences and try new things and Material Matters will give them the opportunity to get creative and discover loads of fun new textures and textiles for themselves. We hope that as well as teaching children new skills it will truly inspire and excite them about a different art form. The aim is to encourage everyone to experiment, who knows what we might end up with!”

Material Matters is taking place as part of national Arts & Kids Week 2006, created by the Prince of Wales Arts & Kids Foundation and Classic FM. Running from 21-29 October 2006, Arts & Kids Week is the perfect opportunity to get children involved in the arts.
