Giant Fun at Manchester Art Gallery

Thursday 28th September 2006

Jump into a giant wonderland on Sunday 8 October as Manchester Art Gallery goes Larger Than Life for this year’s Big Draw event.

The Big Draw is an award-winning annual national campaign designed to get everyone drawing, and Manchester Art Gallery’s Big Draw events have become highlights of the year, attracting hundreds of family visitors annually.

This year, Manchester Art Gallery is putting the ‘big’ into Big Draw by creating a world where everything is oversized. From stilt-walkers who greet you when you arrive, to oversized fruit and vegetables that you can arrange to create an enormous still life picture, you will get a sense of what life must have been like for the Borrowers! See if you can spot the gallery’s giant pencil sharpener, light bulb and pineapple or pit your wits against your friends with a game of giant connect-four.

Children also have the chance to make their very own sketchbook, which they can use to try out the gallery’s huge pencils. And if all of the excitement makes them hungry, they can decorate their own giant cookies in the gallery cafe for £1.

For those who want some professional inspiration, book illustrator Jackie Morris will be at the gallery all day, drawing pictures which will be projected for larger than life impact.

And adults need not worry about the children having all the fun, as they can have a go at life drawing or see the gallery’s rarely seen world class collection of works on paper.

Zoe Renilson, Family Programmes Manager at Manchester Art Gallery, comments, “Last year's Big Draw event was a phenomenal success, with hundreds of visitors staying all day, but this year promises to be literally bigger and better. Larger Than Life will give the whole family the chance to take part in something off the scale and, most importantly, have fun together.”
